CPA Exam Study Materials: What You Actually Need
Choose the missing job before you buy another course, CPA exam book, textbook, or flashcard deck.
The short answer
Cover five jobs. Buy nothing until you can name the missing one.
Most candidates need five jobs covered: current exam scope, clear instruction, fast recall, question application, and exam rehearsal. One product can cover several jobs. Do not buy a second resource until you can name the job your current stack cannot do.
A 60-second material check
Build your stack by job, not by product count
The first job has an official owner. The other four are practical jobs your chosen materials must perform. One resource may cover more than one.
- 01
Scope
Current AICPA Blueprint
A list of the Areas, Topics, skills, and task types you must cover.
- 02
Learn
Lesson, course, or current textbook
An explanation you can restate and use without the source open.
- 03
Recall
Short notes or flashcards
Rules, formulas, triggers, and exceptions you can recall quickly.
- 04
Apply
Fresh MCQs and TBSs
Correct decisions on unfamiliar facts, calculations, and exhibits.
- 05
Rehearse
Timed mixed sets or mock exams
Evidence about pacing, switching, stamina, and unfinished work.
Official scope source: AICPA CPA Exam Blueprint guidance. The AICPA says the Blueprint should be used with other preparation materials. The stack advice above is CPAPass editorial guidance, not an AICPA product endorsement.
Illustrative six-week FAR example
Keep the course. Fix the missing job.
Jordan owns a current full review course. Across three fresh 20-question FAR inventory sets, Jordan answers 11, 12, and 12 correctly, for 55%, 60%, and 60%. Definitions are easy to recall, but classification and calculation choices still break down when the facts change.
- Evidence
- The gap appears in fresh application, not in access to instruction.
- Keep
- The current course and one focused inventory explanation.
- Do not buy
- Another complete course that repeats the same lectures and notes.
- Add for seven days
- Three decision flashcards, 15 fresh FAR MCQs, and one related TBS.
- Keep rule
- Keep the added material only if reasoning improves on an unfamiliar set.
- One focused explanation
- 3 decision flashcards
- 15 fresh MCQs
- 1 related TBS
A better next purchase decision
Test the stack before buying more
Start with public FAR practice. If you want to test lessons, flashcards, MCQs, and TBSs in one account, the CPAPass 5-day trial requires no credit card. Mock exams require eligible paid access.
Which CPA Exam material solves which job?
Use the rightmost column aggressively. Removing duplication is often more useful than adding another format.
| Material | Job | Keep or buy when | Skip or remove when |
|---|---|---|---|
| AICPA Blueprint | Define current exam scope | You use the current section version to check coverage and skill level. | Never skip the scope check. Do not treat it as a teaching course. |
| NASBA Candidate Guide | Check current exam-administration guidance | You need the current Candidate Guide for scheduling and testing procedures. | Do not use it for state eligibility or licensure rules. Check your jurisdiction. |
| Course or lesson | Teach unfamiliar content | You can explain and apply the lesson after closing it. | More watching repeats a rule you already know but still misapply. |
| CPA textbook or exam book | Explain or reference a defined Topic | The edition is current and solves a specific explanation gap. | Your course already covers the same material clearly. |
| Notes or flashcards | Recall compact rules and cues | Each prompt can be answered before the card is flipped. | Cards copy paragraphs or familiar question wording. |
| MCQ bank | Test decisions on changed facts | Questions are fresh enough to expose reasoning and calculation errors. | Answer memory is driving the score. |
| TBS bank | Practice exhibits and response workflow | The Blueprint calls for application or analysis and execution is weak. | The real gap is a basic rule you cannot yet explain. |
| Mock exam | Rehearse timing and section switching | Component skills are stable enough for a longer timed check. | You need a diagnosis of one narrow content gap. |

Where CPAPass fits
Official owners
- AICPA owns the official exam scope through the current Blueprint.
- NASBA publishes the Candidate Guide for Uniform CPA Examination administration.
- Your jurisdiction and state board control eligibility and licensure rules.
CPAPass product roles
- Digital lessons and cheat sheets can support the learn and review jobs.
- Flashcards can support compact recall.
- MCQs and TBSs can test application.
- Mock exams can rehearse longer timed work under eligible paid access.
- Saved weakness analysis uses submitted MCQ evidence during eligible access.
CPAPass is not an official AICPA or NASBA source. It can cover several study jobs, but it is not automatically the right replacement for every candidate's current course. If you specifically need a printed textbook or audio, choose a resource that clearly provides it. Check current CPAPass access and pricing.
Final check
Five questions before buying more
- 1Can I name the exact job this material will perform?
- 2Does my current stack already perform that job?
- 3Is the edition or access aligned with the current exam?
- 4Can I test its value on fresh work before buying more?
- 5What evidence will make me keep, replace, or remove it?

CPA Exam study-material questions
- What CPA Exam study materials do I need?
- Start with the current AICPA Exam Blueprint and NASBA Candidate Guide. Then cover instruction or reference, quick rule review, fresh MCQs, task-based simulations, and timed rehearsal. The right stack fills your actual gaps without duplicating every format.
- Are the AICPA CPA Exam Blueprints enough to study from?
- No. The AICPA says the Blueprints should be used with other preparation materials. They define tested content, skill levels, task examples, reference material, and item information, but they are not a complete teaching course or personal practice plan.
- Do I need a CPA textbook or printed exam books?
- Only if a current book explains a Topic better than your existing materials or gives you a reference you will actually use. A large book is not automatically complete or useful. Test it against fresh practice before keeping it.
- Should CPA flashcards replace practice questions?
- No. Flashcards help you recall rules, definitions, thresholds, and short decision cues. MCQs and simulations test whether you can apply them to calculations, exhibits, and changed facts. Use each format for the job it performs.
