How to pass the CPA Exam with an evidence-based plan

Build a CPA Exam pass plan around current official scope, fresh practice evidence, timed rehearsal, and a jurisdiction-aware section sequence.

Direct answer

To pass the CPA Exam, earn at least 75 on each of three required Core sections and one Discipline section. The full Exam contains four four-hour sections, but 75 is a scaled reported score, not 75 percent correct. A plan should therefore focus on correct decisions across current scope and item formats, not on chasing a guessed raw-score threshold.

The passing target is simple; the preparation evidence is not

There is no official universal study-hour target, first-attempt formula, or readiness percentage. CPAPass treats readiness as a collection of evidence: current content coverage, performance on unseen work, error recurrence, task-based simulation execution, pacing, and the ability to explain why an answer changes when a fact changes.

Lock the official boundaries before building the calendar

Start with the current CPA Exam Blueprint guide, then verify the administrative rules for your testing jurisdiction. The Blueprint defines eligible content, skill levels, item counts, and score weights. NASBA and the jurisdiction control application, Notice to Schedule, appointment, and examination credit rules. Mixing those authorities creates plans that look complete but fail on a real deadline.

The Exam is offered through continuous testing, but seat availability and score timing still affect a personal plan. Do not describe one credit window as a national rule. Record your exact jurisdiction, current credit expiration dates, Notice to Schedule expiration, target appointment, and expected score timing in the same calendar.

A seven-stage CPA Exam pass loop
  1. 1Verify the administrative boundaryConfirm jurisdiction eligibility, examination credit, and Notice to Schedule timing before the study calendar depends on them.
  2. 2Map current scopeUse the current AICPA Blueprint to list the section areas, weights, skills, and representative tasks.
  3. 3Collect a fresh baselineUse unseen MCQs and TBS work to identify the decisions, calculations, and exhibit habits that actually break.
  4. 4Repair one error classWrite the missed fact, the rule it triggered, and the answer output that should have changed, then work a new item.
  5. 5Mix and time the workMove from isolated topics to mixed MCQs, TBSs, and testlet pacing only after the component decisions are stable.
  6. 6Rehearse the official interfaceUse the AICPA sample test to learn navigation and software behavior without treating it as a readiness score.
  7. 7Sit, review, and repeatUse the reported result and fresh post-score work to plan the next section or a retake under the current jurisdiction rule.

Turn the Blueprint into work you can finish and verify

A Blueprint checklist should end in observable work. For each area, record whether you can explain the rule, classify a changed fact pattern, complete the calculation or conclusion, and handle the related exhibits. A highlighted chapter is an input. A correct decision on a fresh item is evidence.

Use the CPA study planner when you need to place those outputs on dates. Keep learning methods with the CPA Exam study-tips guide. Use this page for the end-to-end pass loop, the planner for calendar construction, and the study-tips guide for learning technique.

Worked example: diagnose before adding more material

Suppose a candidate completes three fresh FAR sets and repeatedly misses lease classification, bond measurement, and exhibit reconciliation. Rewatching every lecture would treat the syllabus as uniformly weak. The eight-week example instead assigns a rule review, a new classification item, a calculation, and a TBS to each recurring error before the candidate moves to mixed work.

The example does not prescribe eight weeks for every candidate. A candidate with stronger current accounting knowledge may move faster; another may need more time or a different appointment. The useful feature is the control loop: each block has a specific output, each review names the cause of the miss, and the next block changes when fresh evidence does not improve.

Use a readiness dashboard without inventing a passing cutoff

Track at least four lenses separately: content coverage, fresh accuracy, TBS completion, and pacing. Add error recurrence so a familiar question does not hide an unchanged weakness. A high average can coexist with one Blueprint area that has never been tested or one simulation habit that leaves required cells unfinished.

Do not publish or rely on a universal mock threshold as if it were an AICPA rule. Instead, write the decision behind the appointment: what evidence is stable, what remains weak, what the remaining days can realistically repair, and what rescheduling would cost under current policies. That makes the choice reviewable even though it cannot guarantee the result.

Practice the real format, then protect exam-day decisions

The AICPA sample test is useful because it exposes the testing software and five-testlet flow. It is not a complete section and does not determine readiness. Use it to rehearse navigation, exhibits, spreadsheet behavior, testlet submission, and breaks after separate content practice has supplied the diagnosis.

On exam day, treat every item as consequential, keep a visible time budget, and close a testlet only after the required responses have been checked because a submitted testlet cannot be reopened. If a score is below 75, separate content, application, pacing, and interface causes before starting a fresh retake set.

Use the dedicated guides for section order and pass rates

If the unresolved decision is sequence, use the CPA Exam section-order guide. If it is the current test structure, use the 2026 question-count guide. Population pass rates provide context but cannot calculate your personal chance of passing, select your Discipline, or replace fresh practice evidence.

A useful final review note has one line: the fact you missed, the rule that fact triggered, and the output that should have changed. Rework the same decision on an unseen item. If the miss came from a prerequisite rather than the current topic, repair that prerequisite before repeating another broad set.

Your next three actions

Run a three-step pass-plan review

  1. 1

Verify the current Blueprint, jurisdiction credit rule, Notice to Schedule expiration, appointment, and score timing.

  2. 2

Classify every fresh miss as content, application, exhibit handling, pacing, or answer-discipline evidence.

  3. 3

Change the next study block only after writing the missed fact, triggered rule, and output that should have changed.

Questions candidates ask

What score do you need to pass the CPA Exam?

You need a reported score of at least 75 on each of the four sections. AICPA reports scores on a 0 to 99 scale, says 75 is not a percentage correct, and says scores are not curved.

Can a study plan guarantee that I pass on the first try?

No. No schedule, course, question count, or mock result guarantees a passing score. A sound plan reduces avoidable risk by covering current scope, exposing weak decisions with fresh work, and rehearsing the actual item formats.

Where should I start if I feel overwhelmed by the CPA Exam?

Choose one section, open its current AICPA Blueprint, and complete a small fresh diagnostic across its major content areas. Use the misses to select the next learning and practice block instead of trying to plan all four sections at once.

Does the AICPA sample test show whether I am ready?

No. AICPA says its sample test demonstrates exam format and software functionality, but it is not a complete section and does not determine readiness. Use it for interface rehearsal, not as a score prediction.

How long do I have to pass all four sections?

The examination credit rule varies by jurisdiction. Check the current rule for the jurisdiction under which you are testing, including the length of the window and the event that starts it, before setting a four-section calendar.
