CPA Exam Changes 2027: New Platform, Dates and Prep

What is confirmed, what to check, and how to plan your next CPA Exam section.

By CPAPass Editorial Team

The quick answer

The confirmed 2027 CPA Exam changes are a new delivery platform, an updated interface, and revised score timing. AICPA targets July 1-11 for a testing pause and July 12 for testing to resume. All dates are subject to change.

What is changing on the CPA Exam in 2027?

July 1-11

Testing pauses

Plan your appointment outside the announced transition period.

July 12

New platform launches

Testing is targeted to resume with an updated interface.

Following 12 months

Score timing changes

Use the revised schedule to plan result-dependent decisions.

AICPA describes better accessibility and a modernized exam experience. Because interface changes can affect how questions perform statistically, candidate responses after launch will support recalibration before scores are reported. Read AICPA's explanation.

Does the 2027 update change exam content?

No exam-content change has been announced as part of the July 2027 platform update. AICPA's announcement covers the testing software, interface, and score schedule. It does not list topics being added or removed, new question counts, or a new passing score. Read the platform announcement.

The currently published exam requirements are:

  • Four sections: AUD, FAR, and REG, plus your choice of BAR, ISC, or TCP.
  • Four hours per section: 16 hours of exam time across the four required sections. NASBA exam FAQ.
  • A passing score of 75: this is a scaled score, not 75% of questions answered correctly. NASBA scoring guidance.

What this means for your studying: the interface announcement alone is not a reason to restart your course or drop a topic. Continue preparing for your section, then adjust your topic list if AICPA publishes a relevant Blueprint update.

How do the changes affect score releases and retakes?

Core scores move from frequent releases to two batches for post-transition 2027 sittings. That can mean a longer wait before you can retake a failed section. For example, a July 12 Core sitting has an October 19 target release, a 99-day wait. A September 30 sitting has the same target, a 19-day wait.

When can you retake a section?

You must receive your score before retaking the same section. Then you need to register again, obtain a new Notice to Schedule (NTS), and find an available appointment in an eligible testing window. An open window alone does not make you eligible for a retake. NASBA retake guidance.

Example: FAR on August 2, 2027

Your target result is October 19. If you fail, you cannot fit a retake into August or September while that result is pending. Once the score arrives, a new NTS and an available seat could allow a retake by December 15, with a December 28 target result.

Example: ISC on October 20, 2027

Your target result is December 17, after the October Discipline window has closed. If you fail, the next published window is January 1-31, 2028, with a March 17, 2028 target result. A retake also requires a new NTS and an available seat.

These are planning examples based on the published 2027 and early-2028 schedule, assuming scores arrive on target. Allow for registration processing and check existing credit expirations before relying on either retake plan.

How to prepare for the 2027 CPA Exam changes

  1. Choose a realistic readiness date. Look at recent practice errors, simulation work, and time management before moving an appointment earlier.
  2. Match your materials to the applicable Blueprint. Identify affected topics when an update appears so your review stays focused.
  3. Practice the interface when guidance becomes available. Reserve a session for the official tutorial and navigation before exam day.
  4. Check both expiration dates. Record your NTS expiration and any existing exam-credit expiration separately.
  5. Leave room for another attempt. Include the score wait and a possible retake in your calendar.

NTS validity and exam-credit rules depend on your jurisdiction. Do not assume the transition automatically extends either deadline. Confirm your situation with your board or exam administrator. NASBA NTS and credit guidance.

NASBA also explains that a final passing section taken before the first credit expires can preserve that credit even when its score arrives afterward. Check how this applies to your record before relying on a last-minute sitting. NASBA score information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is changing on the CPA Exam in 2027?
AICPA has announced a new technology delivery platform and updated user interface. Testing is targeted to pause July 1-11 and resume July 12, with an adjusted score-release schedule for 12 months after launch. These dates may change.
Is the CPA Exam getting harder in 2027?
The platform announcement does not establish a harder exam or a new passing standard. It concerns delivery, interface changes, and scoring recalibration. Use the Blueprint effective on your testing date to check tested content.
Is there a new CPA Exam Blueprint for 2027?
The AICPA resource page listed the Blueprint effective January 1, 2026. Check that page again before your sitting. The platform announcement does not confirm that tested content will stay unchanged throughout 2027.
Should I finish my CPA exams before July 2027?
An earlier sitting may work if your preparation, NTS, and appointment availability support it. The transition alone is not evidence that you are ready. Plan around the published score targets and leave room for another attempt.
Will the 2027 changes extend my NTS or exam credits?
Do not assume an automatic extension. NTS validity and exam-credit rules depend on your jurisdiction. Check your own expiration dates and ask your board or exam administrator about your circumstances.
