CPA Exam ISC format: 82 MCQs, 6 TBSs, and five testlets

See the current 2026 ISC CPA Exam format, testlet sequence, four-hour clock, 60/40 score weighting, content ranges, and break rules.

Format at a glance

The 2026 CPA Exam ISC format is a four-hour section with 82 MCQs and 6 TBSs across five testlets. The first two testlets contain 41 MCQs each. The final three contain 1, 3, and 2 TBSs. ISC gives MCQs 60 percent of the section score and TBSs 40 percent, while the other current sections use a 50/50 item-type weight.

ISC is the 60/40 exception in the current CPA Exam

That compact answer is a format boundary, not a study prescription. Item counts do not reveal the raw value of an individual item, and 60/40 does not make simulations optional. AICPA calculates a scaled score using question correctness and relative difficulty, and a reported 75 is required to pass.

Read the testlet order before building a time budget

ISC starts with all 82 MCQs before the six TBSs appear. You may move among questions within the active testlet, but once that testlet is submitted you cannot return. A time plan therefore needs checkpoints at every submission rather than one average number for 88 items.

Use the 2026 CPA Exam question-count guide for exact cross-section counts and the ISC section guide for broad content and a study sequence. This page focuses on ISC testlet mechanics, score weights, and break flow.

Use the break rule without losing the four-hour boundary

AICPA offers the standard 15-minute stop-clock break after testlet 3. If accepted, the clock resumes when the 15 minutes expire. Optional breaks after testlets 1, 2, and 4 leave the clock running. The standard break is separate from the four hours of testing time.

A practical checkpoint is to record the time remaining as each testlet closes. For example, if a candidate uses 78 minutes on testlet 1 and 82 minutes on testlet 2, 80 minutes remain for all six TBSs before considering any additional clock-running break. That arithmetic is a warning about the chosen pace, not an official recommended allocation.

Match format practice to the official content ranges

The Blueprint allocates 35 to 45 percent to Information Systems and Data Management, another 35 to 45 percent to Security, Confidentiality and Privacy, and 15 to 25 percent to SOC Engagements. Those are content ranges across an exam form, not a promise that a personal test will use the midpoint of each range.

The skill allocation is also unusual enough to use deliberately: 55 to 65 percent remembering and understanding, 20 to 30 percent application, and 10 to 20 percent analysis, with no evaluation allocation. A topic checklist should identify whether the work asks for recall, explanation, application, or analysis before selecting a question format.

What changed in the 2026 ISC Blueprint

AICPA says the 2026 ISC revisions were not intended to significantly change the nature or scope of eligible content. The update changed references for the renamed SOC 1 guide, HIPAA definitions, NIST Privacy Framework version handling, the PCI DSS quick-reference guide, and Data Analytics textbook coverage.

The update also clarified change-management tasks, including tools and documentation, patch management examples, testing code changes and deployment, and configuration parameters. Use the current effective Blueprint even when an older summary appears similar, because source references and representative tasks can change without a redesigned section format.

Practice the format without treating familiarity as readiness

Use the official sample test for interface behavior: navigation, exhibits, spreadsheet use, testlet submission, and the break transition. AICPA explicitly says the sample test is not a complete section and does not determine readiness. Pair interface rehearsal with unseen ISC MCQs and TBSs that cover the current areas and skill levels.

Start with free ISC practice when you need a public question sample. If misses cluster in business continuity and disaster recovery, use the ISC continuity decision guide for that prerequisite, then return to a fresh format-relevant set.

Keep four similar-looking numbers separate

Do not merge item count, score weight, content allocation, and skill allocation. ISC has 82 MCQs, but those MCQs carry 60 percent of the score. A content area can receive 35 to 45 percent of the exam without every item from that area using one format or one skill. A skill range does not predict how many questions you personally answer correctly.

Use the how-to-pass plan for the broader readiness loop. This ISC page gives the mechanical constraints that the plan must respect. It does not claim an ideal number of study hours, a guaranteed time per item, or a raw accuracy that converts to 75.

Your next three actions

Review ISC format in three steps

  1. 1

Write the five testlets, item counts, score weights, four-hour clock, and break position without looking.

  2. 2

Complete fresh ISC MCQ and TBS work, then record whether the miss came from content, skill, exhibit handling, or pacing.

  3. 3

Rehearse the official interface and revise the time checkpoints without inventing a raw-score conversion.

Questions candidates ask

How many questions are on the ISC CPA Exam?

The 2026 ISC format has 82 multiple-choice questions and 6 task-based simulations. The MCQs are split 41 and 41 across the first two testlets; the TBSs are split 1, 3, and 2 across the final three testlets.

How long is the ISC CPA Exam?

ISC is four hours long. The standard 15-minute break offered after testlet 3 stops the exam clock; optional breaks after testlets 1, 2, and 4 do not stop it.

How are ISC MCQs and TBSs weighted?

ISC is weighted 60 percent MCQs and 40 percent TBSs. This is a score weighting, not a statement that each individual MCQ or TBS has an equal raw value.

What content areas are tested on ISC in 2026?

The Blueprint allocates 35 to 45 percent to Information Systems and Data Management, 35 to 45 percent to Security, Confidentiality and Privacy, and 15 to 25 percent to SOC Engagements.

Can I return to an ISC testlet after submitting it?

No. AICPA says candidates may move within the current testlet before submission, but a submitted testlet cannot be reopened and the next testlet cannot be entered before the current one is submitted.
